Taking the Fiero engine out

The engine is now out, and we are setting up the mounts. The Fiero engine removal is much more involved for those of you who don't have a vehicle hoist.  Getting a mid-engined car up high enough to slip the engine & cradle out from underneath is a challenge. You need at least 28" under the truck to slip it out the back, or a bit less if you can take it out through a wheel opening. We dropped it down onto the legs of the "cherry picker" for the ease of moving it out.

June 3 - 2006

The following is a general description of what we did to remove the Fiero engine, transmission & cradle. Their are probable other techniques but basically these are the steps you will need to do.

Begin by removing the battery, air intake & air cleaner. Remove the "dog bone" engine strut, the clutch slave is detached from the transmission and put to the side. The throttle cable & cruise cables are disconnected. The fuel lines are disconnected and taped up to keep the dirt out. The ECM located under the console between the seats is removed and the harness is poked through the firewall hole into the engine compartment.  Disconnect or cut the heater hoses. Remove the upper engine coolant hose.

Jack the car up. Remove the rear wheels, disconnect the caliper flex hoses and remove the 2 bolts that connect the strut to the spindle. Remove the park brake cable from the cradle. Remove the lower coolant hose. Check that you have everything disconnected and the rear of the car is high enough. Be sure that you have the car securely on stands. If the rear is a lot higher than the front, the car could slip on the stands. Now chain up your cherry picker to the engine and remove the 4 cradle bolts.

We had trouble with 1 rear bolt. The secured fastener inside the body section was NOT secured. It spun with the bolt and we had to cut a hole in the body section to access it. We where able to drill a nice clean 2" hole with a hole saw, and grip the fastener with Vise-grips. We will need to either weld or remove it before the cradle gets reattached.

Out comes the engine, transmission, suspension all still attached to the cradle.

Below are some shots of the cradle & engine.
